Temps were in the 50’s this morning so I wasn’t in a hurry to leave. On the road at 9 am and it was 63° sunny and somewhat calm… for Idaho! Ran up to West Yellowstone. Traffic wasn’t to bad and there always seemed to be a passing zone when I needed one. Pretty country as you get north of Island Park. Traffic in Yellowstone is always busy during the summer months. I just pulled off and let the long lines go by then I went 5 or 8 mph under the 45 mph limit. Then if someone came up behind me I would wave them by as I moved to the far right side of the road. Stopped at Gibbons Falls. Quite pretty. I also stopped at Tower Falls and I purchased a sticker there. My goal was to get to the petrified tree. They say it was a redwood tree. There were 3 trunks originally but prior to 1912 souvenir hunters chipped two of them away. Now there is a fence around the remaining one. You can see bark still on the tree.
After that I was headed for Chief Joseph Hwy and Cody. I had never taken 212 out of the park before. Big mistake as I think it is one of the prettier drives. Mountains on either side and some big vista’s too. I had seen one bull Bison somewhat close and besides ducks a few birds and grasshoppers that was it so far. Going down 212 and I got into one of those long valleys and that’s where a lot of Buffalo are. I got some close up video from my helmet mounted Gopro… as close as I wanted to get anyway! Then I started on the Bear Tooth Hwy at the exit of the park and it was great but I turned onto the Chief Joseph Hwy (296?) and it did not disappoint at all. Great curves and enough straighter sections to enjoy the views too. I’ll be going back up it for 62 miles to get back on The Bear Tooth Pass and hwy. I’ll stop and take more pics. I just wanted to get into Cody WY before it got to far into dusk. There were black beef cows along the road and I sure didn’t want to meet one of those up close. During the day I hadn’t eaten anything until around 1 pm. I ate a cup of unshelled salted pistachios while I looked over a vast valley filled with pine trees… so I wanted to get to Cody to eat. I saw a person wearing a Bubba’s BBQ T-shirt at Tower Falls and I asked if it was any good. Yes, we went there twice. Ok, so I went. It was ok. The ribs were tough. You had to really pull to split a rib off. I ended up cutting them and chewing them a lot. I wouldn’t waste my time there. The young waiter asked how everything was… I looked at him and said. The ribs were tough. He shrugged and said. I’m sorry. I then asked. Do you have a veterans discount? Yes, we do. Made it a little better but I won’t recommend you eat there. At least not the ribs. All in all it was a good day. I saw a lot of pretty country. I also got stopped by construction but never had to wait to long. I was on the section where the river had damaged the road when it flooded in the spring.
