I meet a lot of people while riding. Most are happy people because they are out doing what they want and seeing the country. It doesn’t matter if they are in an RV, 4×4, bicycle, or motorcycle. Yesterday I was coming back from the hardware store and I saw 3 choppers in a hotel parking lot. One of them was in pieces so I decided to stop and see if they needed a few more tools as I am carrying a few. So with that decision made I turned around. Asked them if they needed anything. No, but thanks. The guy had the front off of his bike and was filing on the piece that goes into the goose neck. Putting in new head bearings? No, just making a few adjustments so it turns better. Oh… I find out these guys have been out on the road almost as long as I have been. They all have 1 gallon gas cans strapped on their bikes. What’s your range? About 110 to 120 miles. Wow, out west that has to be a major concern. Yeah, we have to plan our route around gas stations. Come to find out they started out on the East coast and went up into New England. I said I’d been there and found out it was expensive up there. One of them said… I know! I spent most of my money up there! Everything was expensive! I see a sticker about Iraqi War Veterans. Are you guys Veterans? Yes. Do you have your National Park Veterans Pass? We sure do! Great. We continue to talk and they tell me thst they built these choppers themselves. They say that they are really simple to work on as it is all old school and no electronics… not even a starter. They build them.. Wyatt said he built his in his living room as he didn’t have a garage. You must not be married then… No, I’m not. He says with a laugh. They get a certain satisfaction out of the fact that they build them and then go ride them across the country. I can understand that. I said goodbye and then one of them came and shook my hand as he found out that I was Navy… he had spent time on a ship watching sailors do there jobs while he was being transported somewhere. I asked him his name. Wyatt! Really? I have a son named Wyatt. Cool… See you guys. Have fun… as they were planning on going to the West coast in Washington or Oregon. They hadn’t figured out which one yet.
