Day 5

Got up and out by 0745 and on the road. It was 45°F in Cut Bank but by 0800 it was in the 50’s and no wind and sunny. Topped off the fuel tanks and headed towards Kalispell to meet up with the last member of our group (Jeff). Took US-2 through East Glacier then up and over to West Glacier. When we got to Columbia Falls one of us took a left at a light because his GPS said to. But ours didn’t and yes it did save him a mile but we stopped and waited and I went back to look not knowing. We were worried for 20 minutes then he called. I’m in Kalispell where are you. We are looking for you!
Made our way to Kalispell and then picked up Jeff. I got my GoPro out and got it working. We headed out and I am just following behind. We wound our way around to Bonners Ferry and had a good late lunch at a truck stop. Then headed up to Creston Canada and I got to use my passport for the first time. Jeff went first then me.
Sir you need to take your helmet off. Ok
You going to Alaska too? Yep. Your plate is from Illinois and his was California. That’s correct as I met these guys on a motorcycle forum and am just tagging along as I retired Friday.
What did you do. I ran a nuclear reactor ar a power plant. Oh, I’ll bet you have heard every Homer Simpson joke there is. Yes, I have. You probably had background checks there didn’t you. Yes, every 3 years the FBI would comb through my life, talk to neighbors and go through my bank accounts to ensure I wasn’t receiving any terrorist money. Oh, wow. Ok, Do you have any fire arms on you? No, I knew I was coming here so I left it at home. Ok, Enjoy your stay. Bye.
Northern ID is beautiful and BC is a continuation of that. Steep mountains covered in pines. No dead pines like in CA either. Valleys in between now and then with gorgeouslarge and small lakes thrown in for good measure. Now the bad news… I had to top off my tank. $1.59 or more per liter for 87 octane. Couldn’t find anything else and who could afford it! I went in to pay and the attendant and I started chatting about the price. He said yep, they don’t pay me enough to be able to drive. I even work 2 to 3 jobs and my car sits. I would literally make enough just to pay for gas to and from work.
Every night I spend $50 CAD to eat vegetables as I can’t afford meat. Really? Yep a head of Iceberg lettuce is $20 CAD. What!? But it’s interesting that anything with sugar in it or candy is dirt cheap. It is cheaper to go out to eat every night than for me to buy groceries and make my own food.
Welcome to Canada.
We left and we made our way to Greenwood, BC. Found a small motel and then walked to downtown about a ½ mile away. Nothing open at 8 pm but the gas station. Pizza and such. Mike calls us and said they found a place that’s open and will.serve us Fish and Chips. Jeff and I walked back. This place is closed. Yeah, but Dick walked in the door as it was propped open and she agreed to fix us Fish and Chips. We said fine. We were expecting a basket of two fish patties and some frozen processed fries. Uh, NO! She brought two plates and went back for the other two. We were amazed at what we saw. Gerry is the owner of The Pacific Grill and said that’s the best Fish and Chips around. We would agree that it would be hard to beat. Real fish filets and looked like homemade fries. Then Gerry chatted with us and told us to go a different route to avoid a lot of bumper to bumper vacation traffic. Then someone asked… Are you open for breakfast? Yep, 8 am but if you guys show up after 0730 I’ll let you in. With that good news we walked back to the motel.
If you’re ever in Greenwood, BC make sure you stop by “The Pacific Grill” and say “Hi” to Gerry while you eat some good food. She was born and raised here.
Jeff started asking me all sorts of questions about Nuclear Power Plants. I answered them all.
Rodney just texted me to see how I was doing.

Gopro is working and I will try to post up some videos. Nice mountains but there is the forest fire haze of smoke.
